The Union de Cooperatives Lazan’ny Sambirano (UCLS) supports 416 farmers across 23 cooperatives in the Sambirano Valley.

This farmer-managed union of smallholder cooperatives is a successful demonstration of famer entrepreneurship in the cacao industry. UCLS has built custom 3-tiered fermentation boxes to ensure quality control and consistency throughout the post-harvest process of their traditional fruity, flavorful Madagascar beans. Custom raised platforms are used for sun drying the beans.

 

The UCLS group operates like a big family, sharing learnings and techniques amongst each other to ensure collective development and wellbeing. Farmers use oxen-drawn carriages to bring cacao from the depths of the forest back to their fermentation unit, just one of the methods that UCLS members pride themselves on as one of the most resourceful communities in the industry. UCLS ensures substantial premiums beyond the average are paid to farmers, a well-deserved benefit for these high quality, unique beans.

Naked Revenue Sharing Opportunity:

UCLS plays an active role in social responsibility for the local community, and is excited to apply revenue sharing funds from the program to the construction of new schools in the local community. There is a constant need for infrastructure development in the region and UCLS believes that the building schools with have the biggest impact by improving education for the youth of Ambanja.
